Donna Seager Gallery is pleased to present an unprecedented pairing of two of its star artists: Joe Brubaker and Claudia Marseille.  The joint exhibition brings together Marseille’s new series of paintings entitled Surface Depths along with the newest works of sculpture by Joe Brubaker - The Seekers .  The exhibition runs from April 17 through May 30.  There will be a reception for the artists on Saturday, May 1 from 6 to 8 and a gallery talk with artist Joe Brubaker on the following Saturday, May 8, from 4 to 6pm.

This exhibition is remarkable in both the ways that these artists resonate with one another and in the ways that they differ.  This new group of paintings by Marseille offers a glimpse at her continual growth and development as an artist.  The paintings are powerful and complex.   Larger encaustic works in the exhibition, such as Finding My Way and Piercing Reality have an unharnessed stormy quality that leave the viewer breathless at their sheer strength.  Other works, such as Fatehpur Sikri act as  tour guide through a variegated and mysterious landscape.  There is an integrity and intelligence to Marseille’s works that has been notable from the start.  She is willing to, in her words “hover in that precognitive gap between thoughts”.  She is committed to giving up control and exploring with curiosity the places where the creative process take her.

Joe Brubaker has populated the gallery once more with a cast of characters that are timeless and sophisticated at the same time.   This exhibition in particular speaks to Joe’s beginnings as a painter. The textures and subtle colorations on the bodies of these works suggest a history and life story that correspond to the interesting faces and heads.  The presence of each one seems as distinct and “knowable” as the well-developed protagonists of our favorite novels.  This is Brubaker’s gift.  He is able to pull together disparate and unlikely materials and breathe life into them in a way that  ensures us that each work has a story to tell in its own language and dialect.

The exhibition is accompanied by a 6” x 6” catalog and DVD of Marseille’s work entitled “Surface Depths” and Joe Brubaker’s book, “Somnambulists”, a celebration of the creative process through his years as an artist.
