Macy Chadwick's prints and artist's books, published under the imprint of In Cahoots Press, often involve the themes of memory, personal communication and visual language systems. While at the University of Arts in Pennsylvania, she extended the definitions of the book to include mixed media sculptures and installation. She currently teaches book arts to both graduates and undergraduates at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and teaches letterpress workshops at the San Francisco Center for the Book.
Macy has an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Her artist books have been displayed nationally and are in collections throughout the U.S., including most recently an acquisition by Yale University.
Exhibition Statement:
While many artists’ books involve sewing as part of the binding process, thread and string have emerged as material elements in both the creation of imagery and the execution of concepts in the artists’ books included in Narrative Thread. The books selected for this show utilize many aspects of the craft of stitching: the physical connecting of objects to pages, thread used as line and design, and the physical manifestations of personal narratives. The visual elements of sewing on the pages of these books help give texture and depth to the surface of the paper, a sense of the action and touch of the artists’ hands, and connectedness in the expression of ideas and emotions.
