William Rushton

William Rushton is a painter steeped in the California painting tradition. His paintings are generous in space, full of light and exhibit a love of paint itself - rich textured luscious oil paints.

Rushton received his Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University in 1966 and his Masters in 1972. He has been teaching painting and drawing at the secondary school level since 1968, and recently retired from teaching art at Cupertino HIgh School.

Prior to the summer of 1990, Rushton painted in a photo-realist style. That summer, a chance visit to the Sunnyvale Creative Arts Gallery had a major impact on him. Paintings by Jerrold Turner were on exhibit. They were painted outdoors and strongly influenced by the work of the early Twentieth Century California Impressionists. At the same time, Rushton discovered the work of Selden Gile and the "Society of Six", which propelled him in a new and exciting direction.

In June of 2006, Rushton will have a one person exhibition, entitled "Stripes". Please email the gallery to be sure to get an invitation.
