The giant still lifes are all about the delicious-ness of the serving
utensils, among other things. the still life embodies a kind of materialism
closely associated with the pleasures of the kitchen. It's why I collect odd
pieces of china and silverware (i'm not the only one). these objects, cups,
bowls, etc., give us a safe and orderly position in the world. The giantness of
these paintings (they seem bigger than they actually are) turns up the
volume on the experience described above.
