The covers of Moon Pops are PVC wrapped in Momigami paper with cutouts of the phases of the moon. The eight haiku in the book are by Jack Kerouac. Kerouac called his haiku efforts "pops" and they did not always follow strict haiku form. Koloski intended to choose poems concerned with travelling, but discovered, after he had chosen them, that all contained imagery of the moon. Hence the title "Moon Pops".
