Nif Hodgson, Bundled Up Artist Book
‘Bundled Up’ begins with an internal thought, represented by a letterpressed blind-embossed line that flows, pauses, bunches, & unraveles over a period of time. The line flows through ten figurative etchings, which exhibit myriad emotions & poses.
The blind embossing makes a strong mark, yet remains subtle enough that it could be missed, like a nuance in a moment. The viewer may or may not connect the line of thought that travels through the book with the ideas and emotions running through the figures. Likewise, the figures are working through the ideas and emotions internally, and are unaware of whether they are revealing these thoughts physically, externally.
While the line appears to resolve in the final outward-looking figure, it metaphorically continues in the ‘endless tie,’ which wraps back around the figures, who are folded into a narrative via an accordian-fold book format. The book is snugly stored in a clamshell box filled with wood shavings, and encased in a washi & wood-vaneer slipcase that is blind embossed with a final string tie.
