Marie Dern and Carl Dern
Marie Dern began Jungle Garden Press in Berkeley in 1974. Using a Vandercook and a Chandler & Price letterpress, she has created books both of her own writing and in collaboration with others. Dern's books are notable in their clarity, simplicity and humor. Carl Dern, while no longer with us, is a constant presence in the gallery with his drawings in Marie's books, his wonderful sculptures of trees and the memory of his great compassion and humor.

Nine-panel, two-sided accordion book featuring 18 drawings of trees in winter, printed letterpress on Arches watercolor paper. Bound by hand with a movable accordion so that "the reader" can arrange the trees in different configurations – an orchard, a forest, a single tree. Each book is accompanied with a metal sculpture of a tree. The sculpture can be placed within the printed orchard. The book and the tree are wrapped in hand-made snowflake paper from Japan. They are nestled in an orchard crate, handmade of sawn pine.
