Helen Stanley
There is no mistaking work by Helen Stanley. Her keen sense of observation and eye for idiosyncracy are well served by her love of process and detail. Working on birch panel, Stanley plays with the picture plane creating cutouts that define space in a 3 dimensional way, but remain 2 dimensional. Stanley is a tour guide, holding up a magnifying glass to all the wondrous and quirky details of ife.
Journalist Nancy Ellis once wrote that Stanley's "evocative works come to the viewer through her unerring eye, impeccable hand and generous heart."
Stanley grew up in Farmington, New Mexico, but moved to San Francisco when she was 18 to attend the Art Institute. She married sculptor Rodger Jacobsen and together they have created a life of family and art, both teaching as well as continuing to pursue their individual work.
