Helen Breger

Helen Breger is a widely exhibited artist whose work is in many private and some museum collections. Before her retirement she had a long, distinguished teaching career at California College of Arts and Crafts as well as the University of California at Berkeley.

Born in Vienna, she was educated at the Art Students League in New York, The San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University and California College of Arts and Crafts (MFA). She was a fellow at MacDowell Colony and in recent years studied bronze casting in Italy.

Helen Breger began printmaking in the 1960's and for more than 2 decades stretched and expanded the world of etching in playful and poignant explorations. Now a nonogenarian, Breger returns to this medium dear to her heart with bold simplicity to tell her life's story. She has created 10 handmade books with the actual etchings that make up her memoir. Breger was graciously and beautifully assisted in this endeavor by two graduates of California College of Arts in Oakland, where Helen spent most of her teaching career. They are Kelly Ball and Alison Yates.
