A_Dress Book
I first met Erin Sweeney through my good friend Margaret Gurney on a visit to New Hampshire where Erin lived at the time. . Her books contained so many elements that I enjoy - stitching and the use of unusual materials. In this clever book, Erin makes use of a personal free association between the places she has lived and dresses that come to mind from both that period and that address. Hence, the title "A_Dress Book". The images are sewn on heavy fabric and resemble old fashion images from the 50's or 60's or McCall's Pattern Books. Sweeney employs a high level of craftsmanship with clever uses of materials.
Erin Sweeney attended MassArt at Bennington College in Vermont and Maine College of Art in Portland. She also attended a workshop in altered books on a work-study scholarship at the Penland School of Crafts in Asheville, North Carolina. She is currently at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia Pennsylvania getting her Masters Degree.
