Partition
altered books, wood
10 1/2 x 28 x 3 ¾ in.
2005
Two books, The High Walls of Jerusalem by Roland Sanders and Arab and Jew; Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land by David K. Shipler are cut into one-inch strips and placed on their ends to reveal every printed page of text as an abstract line resembling an EEG mapping. Each book is placed in an ‘L’ shaped wooden armature which functions as a bookend. Not only do they support other books, as a metaphor the partition references; the wall constructed between the Israelis and Palestinians; the story of the parting of the Red Sea by Moses; and the collapse of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers on 9/11 in New York City.
