Don Guthrie's altered books are
best recognized by their strength of character. Outsider
artist, poet and social critic, Guthrie's early training
was in signpainting. His skill was in creating durable
works that drive a message home.
Access Denied is a sturdy book with a human heart painted skillfully on the cover. The book (and heart) are clamped shut. Like "New Rules" in its strength and impact, this work allows room for interpretation by the viewer, but moves in more than one direction.
