Cathy DeForest
Cathy DeForest is a book artist inspired by found objects and nature. She works in a broad range of media integrating etchings, letterpress printing and photography on surfaces as diverse as paper and silk. She enjoys using the age old presses and techniques of printmaking, like the artists who began this work in the fifteenth century. Her artist books integrate each of her forms of art including original poetry.
She does not seek status or stature.
She is not fond of trivial delights.
Instead, she chooses stillness and
the rhythm of thread - in, out,
and around.

Musings: A Tribute To Those Who Sew, an artist book inspired by a hand embroidered sachet bag Cathy DeForest found in Venice, Italy. At that moment her love affair with textiles and sewing matters was rekindled. The embroidered sachet bag holds an accordion book relating a series of thoughts about the women who do this unique handwork. Cathy searched for additional handsewn works until she found a total of forty handsewn pieces to create an edition of forty books, each with a unique embroidered wrapping. Musings was letterpress printed in Caslon type on her beloved Vandercook Universal I press at Jubilation Press in Ashland, Oregon. (39x5x4 inches)
