Alison Yates was born and raised in Idyllwild, a small town in the mountains of California. Being brought up surrounded by the woods, she was steeped in backwoods culture and instilled with the local traditions and myths of the area. Her work has been greatly influenced by the aesthetic and language of her rural landscape and family, and she has cultivated a strong sense of personal myth-making and storytelling. Alison graduated with a BFA in Printmaking and Book Arts from the California College of the Arts in 2008. She currently lives and works in the Bay Area.

Quell speaks about the interaction of humans with the natural world, the “dark wood” of the Collective Unconscious, and the relationship between human identity and animalistic instinct.

The theatrical nature of the structure lends itself naturally to the telling of tales and this story is relayed through imagery that draws from the simplistic and archetypal nature of children's stories, folk tales and myths.
